Dr. Ithaar Derweesh received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in 1995. He served his internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut, under the direction of Dr. Robert Weiss.
Dr. Derweesh has been engaged in urologic research since 1996. He performed a year-long molecular pharmacology postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Weiss at Yale, and became an American Foundation for Urologic Disease Scholar under the direction of Dr. Andrew Novick at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, investigating kidney tumor immunology and clinical aspects of renal cell carcinoma. Dr. Derweesh also went on to complete a clinical fellowship in Renal Transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic, which also included experience in upper urinary tract laparoscopic procedures including laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy.

Dr. Derweesh was a clinical instructor in the Section of Urology at Yale University School of Medicine and also held attending level responsibility at the Glickman Urological Institute of the Cleveland Clinic from 2002 to 2005.
Dr. Derweesh joined the Department of Urology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2005 as Chief of Urology at the Regional Medical Center of Memphis and Assistant Professor of Urology. In 2006 he became Program Director. Dr. Derweesh built an academic practice in urologic oncology and kidney surgery, specializing in laparoscopic surgery and kidney-preserving treatment for kidney cancer (laparoscopic and open partial nephrectomy, cyroablation). His research interests also include kidney ischemia and reconstruction, as well as the development of new techniques and technologies for minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Derweesh has joined the Department of Surgery/Division of Urology at UCSD Medical Center as an Associate Clinical Professor with his practice centered at the Moores Cancer Center, where he will continue his clinical and investigative work on kidney and other urologic Cancers and draw upon UCSD's world-class clinical and research facilities to provide compassionate, cutting-edge urologic cancer care.

Dr. Derweesh is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society of University Urologists, Southwest Oncology Group, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, European Association of Urology, Endourological Society, and Societe Internationale d'Urologie. He also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology, Canadian Journal of Urology and BMC Urology, and also serves on the AUA Guidelines Committee for Management of the Incidentally Discovered Renal Mass.
