Thomas Hemmen, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Hemmen received his medical training and PhD from the Free University of Berlin, Germany. Following a medical internship at New York University Downtown Hospital, he completed a neurology residency at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York, where he served as Chief Resident.
In 2000, he joined the clinical staff of the UCSD Stroke Center for a two-year Cerebrovascular Fellowship. In addition, he completed a Neurological Intensive Care fellowship at Philipps University in Marburg, Germany. His current positions include Assistant Professor of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego and Consulting Neurologist positions at Sharp Memorial Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital, Alvarado Medical Center in San Diego.
Dr. Hemmen is the Principle Investigator of various clinical trials in cerebrovascular disease investigating the use of TNK, Laser Therapy and Hypothermia after stroke.
Dr. Hemmen is also the Medical Director of the UCSD Stroke Center, which is one of the premier stroke centers in the world. He is a board-certified neurologist and has broad clinical expertise in neurology, cerebrovascular disease, and neurological critical care. At the UCSD Stroke Center, he is instrumental in the translation of research and clinical experience into everyday patient care and in the use of advanced therapeutics in acute stroke, after-stroke care, and stroke prevention.
In addition to his work as principle investigator, Dr. Hemmen is part of the UCSD Stroke Clinical Trials Coordinating Center that is one of the leading Academic Research Organizations in North America, and has managed several large, multi-center trials of acute stroke therapy for industry and NIH.
