David Schanzlin, M.D.

Dr. Schanzlin, a recipient of some of the most prestigious awards in Ophthalmology, is recognized around the world as a leader and authority on refractive surgery. During his twenty-five years in this exploding field, he has helped develop many new technologies, including the FDA approved Intacs and the excimer laser. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Chicago, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the same institution. Dr. Schanzlin then elected to subspecialize in Cornea and External Diseases, completing fellowships at both, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, San Francisco. He advanced rapidly through the academic ranks, achieving the rank of full professor after only five years as a member of the faculty at the University of Southern California. Remarkably early in his already outstanding career, Dr. Schanzlin was selected as Chairman and Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at St. Louis University where he built the Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute. In 1996, Dr. Schanzlin was recruited to serve as Professor of Ophthalmology and establish and direct the Keratorefractive Surgery Division at the University of California, San Diegos Shiley Eye Center. Dr. Schanzlin continues to be a popular and respected instructor, as he travels the world training his colleagues.
