Dr. U, an internationally recognized specialist in the treatment of the vascular anomalies known as AVMs, joined the UCSD faculty in 1978. Patients have traveled to UCSD from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong, and the Sultanate of Brunei to take advantage of his expertise. His neurovascular practice also includes treatment of aneurysms and cavernous hemangiomas. He collaborates closely with interventional neuroradiologists Dr. Charles Kerber and Dr. Wade Wong to provide a complete program of diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. U's other surgical interests include the treatment of brain masses, including meningiomas, astrocytomas, craniopharyngiomas, and pituitary adenomas.
Dr. U is a renowned expert in brain tumor research. Throughout his research career, he has been entrusted with millions of dollars worth of neurosurgical research grants. He has conducted studies on diseases ranging from human pituitary adenomas to glioblastomas and is pioneering work in gene therapy and brain tissue transplantation.
Dr. U has served on numerous scientific and professional committees. Dr. U has been invited as a distinguished lecturer or panelist at over 100 meetings and conferences. He is also a member of numerous scientific and professional societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, San Diego Academy of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Society of Neurologic Surgeons and the North American Skull Base Society.

Dr. Hoi Sang U joined the faculty of UCSD in 1978. Dr. U, serving as Professor of Neurological Surgery, was appointed the Vice-Chief of Academic Affairs for the division of Neurological Surgery in 1995. He has also served as the Chief of Neurosurgical Services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Diego since 1983.

Dr. U earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Tufts Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.
