Dr. Schwab is a hematologist/oncologist specializing in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. As needed Dr. Schwab treats women with hormonal therapy and/or chemotherapy. These treatments can be used to reduce the risk of breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body and can help allow for breast conserving surgery. These medications can also be used to improve the lives of patients with breast cancer that has spread elsewhere in the body. Dr. Schwab is an active researcher and he attempts to scientifically apply the latest advances in cancer research to the benefit of his patients.
His clinical and laboratory research is focused on developing new biological markers of cancer. In the future these markers may help; (1) determine who is at increased risk of developing breast cancer, (2) diagnose breast cancer early and (3) select the least toxic and most effective treatments for breast cancer. Dr. Schwab receives research funding from the National Institutes of Health and several private, non-profit cancer foundations.
