Dr Ward’s training in internal medicine and his fellowship in nephrology (kidney disease) were at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, in his native Scotland (1971-1975).
This was followed by a second fellowship, in immunology and immunopathology, at the Scripps Research Foundation, La Jolla, California (1975-1977). He joined the UCSD faculty in 1977 as a nephrology clinician and researcher. His research program in immunopathology was NIH-funded for many years, and much of his laboratory work had a direct bearing on the mechanisms of diseases treated by apheresis.
In 1979, Dr. Ward became Chief of Clinical Nephrology, and under his direction for the next 19 years the clinical nephrology and dialysis programs at UCSD diversified and expanded. He established a personal consultative practice specializing in complex cases including immunological renal diseases, kidney diseases in pregnancy, acute and chronic renal failure, hemodialysis, transplantation medicine, and the therapeutic uses of plasmapheresis and cytapheresis. He has published and lectured extensively in all these areas.
Dr. Ward founded the UCSD Apheresis Program in 1982, initially offering therapeutic plasmapheresis and cytapheresis (including red cell exchange and white cell reduction). In 1989 he was one of the first to enter the field of peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell harvest apheresis, in support of BMT (blood and marrow transplantation). The UCSD Apheresis Program now performs all such procedures for the conjoint UCSD/ Sharp BMT Program, and for the Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego.
In 2003 Dr. Ward introduced photopheresis at UCSD, which has proved very successful in the treatment of graft-versus-host disease and lung transplant rejection. The Apheresis Program now operates in two UCSD outpatient sites (the principal site at UCSD Hillcrest Hospital, and a satellite unit at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center), and provides apheresis for inpatients at both UCSD hospitals.
As the director of the UCSD Apheresis Program since its inception, Dr. Ward has personally trained all the apheresis physicians and nurses involved in the UCSD program, and numerous others now practicing in many cities across the United States. For many years he has been recognized as the regional expert in apheresis medicine, and as a nationally acknowledged authority on therapeutic apheresis techniques and applications. He remains a popular invited speaker on apheresis topics at national and international medical conferences.
In addition, Dr. Ward is the co-owner, with Dr. Ravidra Mehta, of the U.S. patent on citrate method of anticoagulation for continuous hemodiafiltration that they invented in 1989. The technique has been adopted throughout the world.
In 1997, Dr. Ward received the “Doctor of the Year” award of excellence at UCSD Medical Center. He says, "Clinical care of patients remains an attractive intellectual challenge and a fulfilling aspect of my work, particularly because of the teaching component that accompanies it ."
