Dr. Savides is a nationally recognized expert in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and therapeutic endoscopy (ERCP, double balloon enteroscopy). He founded and is the director of the UCSD EUS program, which is now one of the premier programs in the United States for diagnosis and staging of GI, pancreatic, and lung cancer. He is a community referral specialist for advanced pancreatico-biliary endoscopic procedures (ERCP), GI oncology, Barrett's esophagus, GI bleeding, and difficult polyp removal.
He has published over 90 original research papers, invited reviews, and book chapters. His research interests include EUS for pancreatic and lung cancer, endoscopic treatments of gastrointestinal bleeding, and colon cancer prevention. He was awarded the 2002 American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy/Olympus Career Development Award, the 2003 UCSD Healthcare Award for Excellence in Clinical Care, the 2004 UCSD Department of Medicine Teaching Award, and was listed in San Diego Magazine as one of the "Top Doctors" in Gastroenterology in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2005 he was elected to the UCSD Academy of Clinician Scholars. He is on the editorial boards of the publications Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Virtual Human Journal of Endosonography. He is on the Board of Governors for the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2007-2010).
