Ravindra L. Mehta, MD
Nephrology

Ravindra L. Mehta is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the University of California, San Diego, where he directs the clinical nephrology programs. An experienced clinician, for the past 20 years he has treated patients with kidney disease (chronic renal insufficiency, end-stage renal disease, acute renal failure) caused by all types of underlying conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, lupus, sepsis, and many others. He manages patients on hemodialysis, on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), on peritoneal dialysis and with kidney transplants, as well as patients who do not require dialysis or transplant.
Dr. Mehta has directed several clinical studies in the management of patients with kidney disease, including comparing different dialytic modalities in the treatment of acute renal failure (ARF), evaluating different predictive models for outcomes in ARF, investigating the role of cytokine removal by dialysis membranes in sepsis and ARF, and evaluating techniques for determining the amount of excess fluid in dialysis patients, among others. He has also participated in clinical trials for the treatment of hypertension. In addition to his clinical and research activities, his dedication to educating and mentoring medical students and junior physicians has earned him several awards for teaching.
An internationally recognized expert in dialytic management of acute renal failure with CRRT, Dr. Mehta delivers approximately 10-15 lectures per year on this and other topics at medical conferences around the world. He chairs the annual International Conference on CRRT. He is also the leader of the International Society of Nephrology Commission on Acute Renal Failure; president of the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative; and the author or coauthor of numerous scientific articles, papers, and book chapters. He received the M.B.B.S. degree from the Government Medical School in Amritsar, India. He received his M.D. and D.M. degrees from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India.
