Dr. Ball is chief of the UCSD Bone Marrow Transplant Division. His honors include both the Scholar Award and the Stohlman Award from the Leukemia Society of America. Dr. Ball has pursued the development of new therapies for patients with cancer throughout his career and has been issued patents on four of his treatment inventions. His current clinical trial interests are focused on all aspects of bone marrow transplantation and antibody-mediated therapies for acute myeloid leukemia.
Dr. Ball is a reviewer for more than a dozen journals and serves on the Editorial Boards of four additional journals. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and has served as editor/author of three books.

Dr. Ball is a professor of Medicine, Director and Chief of UCSD Blood and Marrow Transplantation Division and Program. He came to UCSD in 1998 after seven years as Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and seven years as Director of Bone Marrow Transplantation at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Cneter (N.H.). He is an elected officer of the International Society of Experimental Hematology.
